Breathe in/ Breathe out (1998-9)
Within the Breathe in/Breathe out environment, the viewer is encouraged to walk among eight body height stands. Atop each stand are two functioning clock mechanisms with only their second hand attached. In place of the clock face, pie graphs have been positioned. The sixteen graphs are based on various combinations of potential breathing patterns. As the second hand ticks around the graph, the viewer is invited to breathe in and breathe out according to the suggested pattern. Each pattern had a different affect of the viewers body either leaving them gasping for breath or hyperventilating. In opposition, the clocks ticking in unison created a highly comforting and appealing sound.
This work was included in the exhibition system*, held at Linden Gallery, Melbourne in 1999.
