Spector (1999)
music stands, mirrors and clock mechanisms; 170cm x 600cm x 400cm
Designed specifically for Talk gallery on the sixth floor of the Nicholas Building in the centre of Melbourne, Spector drew on the spectacular view from the gallery’s windows over St Kilda Road and on the external sounds coming up from the commotion below. Forty music stands holding mirrors and clock mechanisms stood in regimental format facing the windows of the space. While the mirrors engaged in a visual dialogue with the outside view, the sound of the clock mechanisms second hands tapping regularly against the metal of the stand remained in dialogue with the sounds of the outside city life. As the stands were relatively close together, viewers had to be especially mindful of their bodies as they entered this space.
